Mines RTP and odds: what the grid actually pays
Mines RTP is easier to read than a slot RTP, because there is no bonus round to hide anything in. There is a grid of 25 tiles, a mine count, and a single formula that turns those two numbers into a multiplier. Below it is unpacked, calculated across eighteen rows, and checked against a pay table the developer published itself.
The formula behind every multiplier
A calculator settles it in a minute, and it is worth settling once.
The grid holds 25 tiles, M of them mined, so the safe count is 25 minus M. You want to open k safe tiles in a row. The chance of that is a ratio: how many sets of k tiles can be drawn from the safe ones, divided by how many sets of k exist across all twenty-five.
The fair multiplier is the inverse of that chance - if something happens once in a hundred, the fair payout for it is a hundred. The real multiplier is the fair one scaled by RTP. The entire distance between fair and casino fits into that single scaling step.
The check clears on all four rows InOut Games published. At 3 mines the ceiling is 2185 across 22 clicks, and the formula returns the same figure. At 5 mines it is 50473 across 20, at 10 mines 3105322 across 15, at 24 mines 23.75 across one. Every one matched, which is why the table below can be trusted.
Odds and multipliers on a 5x5 grid
Multipliers are calculated at an RTP of 97, the middle of the range here. For a game with a different RTP, scale the column by the ratio.

The table reads best from the bottom up. The row for ten mines and fifteen tiles carries the multiplier people come to mines for, and next to it the chance that explains why such rounds only ever show up in other people's clips. The row for three mines and one tile shows the opposite: almost certain, and almost meaningless to your balance.
The middle is the useful part. On five mines, ten open tiles pay 17.16 at a chance of 5.65 - the range where a round still finishes often enough to be seen, while the multiplier has stopped being symbolic.

The right-hand column is money rather than theory. Across a thousand bets of a hundred each, a game at 98.4 keeps about fifteen hundred and a game at 92 keeps eight thousand. The mechanics are identical tile for tile, and no amount of playing will let you feel the difference inside one evening: it only surfaces over distance.
Note the bottom row. Hacksaw Gaming prints the RTP straight into the game's name, which is unusually candid - normally the figure is buried in a help screen. It also carries a hint: if a studio ships a 94 build and a 92 build, then somebody at the casino chooses which one you get.
Where the maths ends and the ceiling starts
A theoretical multiplier and what a game will actually pay are two different numbers.
Hacksaw Gaming sets a hard cap in stakes: 10000, and the game stops counting there. InOut Games states it in money at 20000 USD, so it scales with your bet - unreachable on a small stake, and biting early on a large one. Pragmatic Play states a multiplier of 5070293, the highest ceiling in the set.
Which makes the practical reading simple. The 3105322 sitting in the ten-mine row is a genuine figure, but almost no game will ever pay it: the ceiling intervenes first. So when you are picking a game for a big multiplier, read the published ceiling rather than the table row, because every studio sets its own.
Frequently asked questions about mines RTP
Does mines RTP change with the mine count
No. Multipliers are rescaled so the return stays where it was. Check it on the extreme: at 24 mines one tile is safe, the chance is 4 percent and the payout is 23.75. Four hundredths times 23.75 is exactly the stated return. The same works at 3 mines, at 5 and at 10.
How is a mines multiplier calculated
The chance of opening k safe tiles in a row is a ratio of combinations: how many sets of k tiles exist among the safe ones, divided by how many exist among all 25. The fair multiplier is the inverse of that chance, and the real multiplier is the fair one scaled by RTP.
Why is one game at 92 and another at 98.4
Because they are different games by different studios, and each sets its own cut. Minesweeper by BGaming keeps 1.6 percent of turnover, Mines Supreme by Hacksaw Gaming keeps 8. That gap of 6.4 points means the second game eats a bankroll five times faster over the same run of bets.
